పెళ్లిళ్లు - Marriages

A Hindu marriage is far more than a social gathering. It is a spiritual journey that binds two souls in shared responsibilities, joys, and duties. Through rituals, vows, and the presence of the divine fire, the couple is reminded that their union is eternal—meant not only for this life but for lifetimes to come.

Though regional customs vary, Hindu weddings usually follow these key rituals:

1. Kanyadaan

  • The father gives away the daughter to the groom.

  • It is a gesture of trust and sacred offering.

2. Mangalsutra & Sindoor

  • The groom ties a sacred necklace (Mangalsutra) and applies vermilion (Sindoor) to the bride’s forehead, symbolizing marital status.

3. Saptapadi (Seven Steps)

  • The couple takes seven steps around the sacred fire (Agni), each step representing a vow:

    1. Nourishment

    2. Strength

    3. Prosperity

    4. Happiness

    5. Progeny

    6. Health

    7. Friendship and loyalty

4. Vivah Homa

  • Sacred fire is invoked and worshipped as a witness to the marriage.

5. Panigrahana

    • The groom holds the bride’s hand, symbolizing their union and promise to stand by each other.
